How to Deal with Workplace Toxicity, Part 1

#business performance #corporate mental wellbeing #corporate mental wellbeing strategy #toxic #toxicity #toxicrelationships #workplace mindfulness #workplace performance #workplacetoxicity May 10, 2022

Hello! I’m Lori West, founder of Business Brilliance, and I show high performers like you how to harness the power of the mind to convert performance plateaus into performance peaks.

In this series, we’re going to look at a topic that gets mentioned and misused A LOT in business settings, especially when discussing workplace cultures and people.

It’s a small word that is loaded with meaning. That word?

TOXIC.

It’s a word I hear thrown around by a lot of people, often inappropriately as a label assigned to individuals.

It’s used as a descriptor for workplace environments that don’t work well.

And just the mere mention of the word conjures up some pretty awful connotations.

It’s an uncomfortable topic, isn’t it?

And I must forewarn you. If you’re a person who liberally uses this word to describe others, you may not like what you hear in this series.

But I promise you, this conversation will make a big difference to your experience of toxicity.

Before we begin our discussion properly, let’s get you in a position in which you can face the topic from a degree of comfort.

Take three deep breaths in through the nose, out through the mouth, in through the nose, out through the mouth, in through the nose, out through the mouth, close your eyes, allow your breath to come to a natural rhythm and notice what occurs for you when I say the word TOXIC.

  • What are you seeing?
  • What are you remembering?
  • What emotions are present?
  • Where do you feel these emotions in your body?
  • What sensations are present?
  • What overall effect does the word toxic have on you?
  • What impulses or behavioural tendencies do you notice when you consider the word?

Now, imagine as you breathe in that you are infusing the entirety of your experience of toxicity with your cleansing breath.

As you breathe out, see your body and mind break up the toxicity and release it.

And when you’re ready, take three deep breaths in through the nose, out through the mouth.

Filling up the abdomen as you breathe in through the nose, out through the mouth, in through the nose, out through the mouth, and open your eyes.

Before I say anything else about the topic of toxicity, I want to give you the opportunity to reflect upon it.

In particular, I want you to apply mindfulness as we just did to reflect upon the exercise we just completed.

  • What was present for you around the topic of toxicity?
  • How did breathing through it help?

Write down what you noticed.

Write down what occurs to you now as you reflect on what you experienced with the exercise.

And keep reflecting upon the topic of toxicity.

Why? Well, over the next three  weeks, I’m going to share my thoughts on toxicity.

I’m also going to show you why it’s important to refrain from assigning labels.

Finally, I’m going to show you how to deal with toxicity in a powerful, responsible way.

Pop what you’re discovering it in the comments or DM me.
